Ep. 012: SHADOWS OF CHANGE, Pt. 2 with ANGELINE QUINTILLA

A fresh new print of The FOFIF zine under the shadow of the famous IFC Center marquee.

The rep film series SHADOWS OF CHANGE: Women & Horror in 2014 wrapped up at IFC Center last week and in this episode of the pod I’ll be sharing my reactions to that experience. I’m joined by Angeline Quintilla who shares her perspective on the horror genre and how it has evolved from a core memory getting rekt by The Ring (2001) on opening night to her newfound appreciation of the genre in this age where women are more commonly seen in the director’s chair.

The rep series screened 8 feature-length films on DCP. There were live and pre-recorded intros, filmmaker Q&As, and fresh new zines by The Future of Film is Female that were sold at the concessions stand. The zine includes observations on each film in the rep series from various programmers and filmmakers. It’s sold on their website HERE!

In the last episode of the show I chatted with Caryn Coleman — founder and executive director of the non-profit org The Future of Film is Female — and I learned all about her amazing impact on the filmgoing scene in NYC over the last decade including the crucial work she does at The FOFIF. She’s an advocate for short films, a horror girly, and quickly becoming a legendary film curator in the annals of NYC rep cinema.

Angeline and I saw a fantastic Q&A with director Ana Lily Amirpour that Caryn Coleman moderated after a screening of A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT. This is a movie that has stuck with me and Angeline over the years. We became invested in Amirpour’s career ever since and really enjoyed hearing her speak on the film’s 10-year anniversary. For the standard price of admission we got an incredible bang for our buck and this movie truly hits different on the big, silver screen. That screening happened on Easter evening and Caryn mentioned that backstage Amirpour told her, “Jesus was the first vampire.”

If you want to learn more about Caryn then listen to my interview with her in the last episode of the show. Visit the website for The FOFIF to learn how you can support them and plan your next movie outing at one of their new or rep screenings at the large array of cinemas they partner with in NYC, LA, and beyond.

Stay tuned for my next episode dropping THIS FRIDAY where you can hear my conversation with The Town Hall’s Artistic Director Melay Araya. We’re talking about her next event, the one night only double feature on Saturday April 20:

Byeong Woo Lee Guitar Concert + Bong Joon Ho’s Mother (2009) Film Screening with Live Score

Thanks for listening!
