💡Get the complete experience by listening to my interview with Queer Film Historian Elizabeth Purchell on Ep. 020: WEIRD WEDNESDAY, PT. 1
I’ve seen a few rep screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse in Downtown Brooklyn before, but they’ve been one-offs like the LOTR: Return of the King (extended edition) re-release, The Host (for Karen Han’s book tour), or a spontaneous brunch screening of Hook. If you go to their website and navigate to the Only at the Alamo section then you’ll find they offer countless film series for any movie itch you need scratched.
I discovered Elizabeth Purchell through a tweet by Programmer Steve MacFarlane. He was getting the word out on her upcoming September edition of WEIRD WEDNESDAY — the rep film series she programs for the Alamo Drafthouse in Downtown Brooklyn. She’s a little new to NYC since she moved here approx. one year ago from Austin, TX. I was lucky to have her as a guest in episode #20 of Marquee Mixtape. Give it a listen to learn all about her work as a Queer Film Historian. She’s incredibly talented and full of film knowledge. I could listen to her talk for days!
Ina E. is my guest on this episode, and we’re sharing our reactions to watching 35mm screenings of Corey Yuen’s SO CLOSE (2002) and Larry Cohen’s BONE (1972) at Weird Wednesday. Me and Ina have been friends since we met each other working on remote live event gigs at the height of the pandemic in 2020. I didn’t realize her introduction to seeing rep movies was because of me! According to my Letterboxd diary, it all started in 2022 when I invited her to a free rooftop screening of PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE in Gowanus.
We had a great chat about exploring movies on the fringes and how rewarding the experience can be when we’re brave enough to be open-minded about what we watch.
