Guest Programmers can provide a refreshing sidebar to a cinema’s regular programming by bringing their unique perspective and taste in movies to the marquee. This month Nitehawk Cinema is celebrating the spooky season and Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month with their latest rep film series, HISPANIC HORROR, and they’ve enlisted their very own Content Editor, Kat Rodriguez, to program it. She once programmed Realismo Mágico around this time last year and now she’s back at it behind the screens.
Here are the films that will be screened for Hispanic Horror:
Williamsburg
10/7 — TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID (2017)
10/12-13 – JUAN OF THE DEAD (2011)
10/25-26 — WE ARE THE FLESH (2016)
Prospect Park
10/19-20 — LA LLORONA (2019)
10/21 — THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE on 35mm (2001)
One of Nitehawk Cinema’s distinct characteristics is the pre-show before every screening. It’s approximately 30 minutes long and is crucial to setting the vibe for audiences entering the auditorium. The pre-show includes housekeeping reminders on utilizing discounts that are offered to everyone who holds a ticket. On the more creative side of things, copious media artifacts are cleverly curated to pair with the movie you’re seated for like music videos, red carpet interviews, talk show clips, old TV commercials, etc. Once it’s showtime, there are standard new release movie trailers, then there are originally edited handcrafted trailers Kat makes in-house just for the repertory film series offered at Nitehawk Cinema. Sprinkled throughout the pre-show are the famously animated promos by Cressa Maeve Áine, Chris Mulligan, and Steve Sues. Kat is responsible for assembling all of those assets and so much more! It’s a huge responsibility to orchestrate all of those pieces in a way that warmly greets new and returning audience members while enhancing Nitehawk’s personality beyond the physical location.
