This episode’s guest is Samm Deighan. She is a film historian with over 200 Blu-ray contributions in the form of written liner essays, video essays, audio commentaries, and more. She’s a Special Features Producer at Vinegar Syndrome, a Film Programmer, and the author of four film books including the new release she co-edited, Revolution in 35mm: Political Violence and Resistance in Cinema from the Arthouse to the Grindhouse, 1960-1990.
In September, Samm was at a 35mm screening of Corey Yuen’s So Close (programmed by Liz Purchell) at the Alamo Drafthouse in Downtown Brooklyn to introduce the screening. She dropped a ton of knowledge about the film and the filmmaker while giving Corey Yuen a heartfelt memorium. You can listen to it here:
Now, Samm is pairing the stops in her book tour with rep screenings she’s curated. She made a stop at the Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art and hosted a secret screening of a “pinky violence classic,” then stopped at the Brooklyn Book Festival, and tonight (Monday OCT 28 at 7PM) she’ll be at Nitehawk Cinema Williamsburg with books to sign along with a screening of BLOODY FRIDAY (1972).
Listen to this episode to hear how she discovered her rep cinema community that would send her down countless film rabbit holes and lead her to become one of the wisest voices shaping the canon.
