I’m trying something out with this episode. This will be a two-parter with this episode being Part 1 and mainly focusing on my interview with Alexander Fee, the Film Programmer behind the upcoming repertory series — Taisho Roman: Fever Dreams of the Great Rectitude — opening on Dec 9 at Japan Society. When the series ends on Dec 16 then I’ll publish Part 2 where me and a special guest will spend the episode reacting to some of the films we saw together in the Taisho Roman series.
I’m very pleased to share my conversation with Alexander Fee. He has a busy month ahead and was generous in giving us his time for the pod. We chat about his trajectory from learning celluloid projection at Doc Films in Chicago to projecting for Anthology Film Archives and Tribeca Film Festival along with getting hired as Japan Society’s Film Programmer. He’s also an incredibly gifted video editor and creates some exquisite trailers for his repertory film series.
Then we go deep into the history and culture behind his upcoming film series, which is going to be a wild ride of psychosexual surrealism and occult stories set in a unique renaissance-like era of Japan about 100 years ago. We discuss the significant of ‘Imported 35mm prints’ and live subtitles, which the Taisho Roman series will provide.
Get hype because I’ll be visiting Japan Society for the first time to experience this repertory film series and I’m very much looking forward to dedicating an entire episode to my reaction to it.
Taisho Roman: Fever Dreams of the Great Rectitude is screening at Japan Society from Dec 9 — 16.
