I’m <typing furiously> to get this dispatch from MoMI out to you readers because not only am I thrilled to share the newest episode of the Marquee Mixtape podcast featuring my conversation with Sonia Epstein and David Levine — but I must also stress that their rep film series Welcome to the Machine is ending on March 2 with only a handful of screenings left, including:

Part of the ongoing Science on Screen series at MoMI, Welcome to the Machine features a selection of films that “depict digital devices entrapping humans.” It is coinciding with artist David Levine’s DISSOLUTION — a 20 min holographic film on view at MoMI through March 3.

Dissolution is one of the most unique viewing experiences I’ve had. It’s like watching a genie go mad, trapped in its bottle. The 3D sculpture is encased in a black box room which gives the physical experience a sort of Russian Doll effect. David describes the mechanism that creates the volumetric display as “violently analogue.” You can’t ignore the ominous sound it makes, too. I couldn’t help but think of Guillermo del Toro’s Cronos because much like the vampiric device in that film, the machine that is projecting Dissolution could very well take a piece of you with it if you get too close.

Tap into this episode to learn more about Dissolution and its companion film series Welcome to the Machine! I’ll be back in early March to share more reactions and takeaways to the whole film series.
